New Delhi: Delhi High Court Monday ordered police to provide round-the-clock security to a lawyer who was allegedly beaten up inside a courtroom in the Tis Hazari complex while proceedings were on.Seeking a report from police and the district judge of Tis Hazari, a special bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justices V Kameswar Rao and Nitin Sambre noted that such an incident not only threatens individual lawyers but also erodes the dignity and propriety of courts.HC said if such an incident occurred, it was a serious matter, and directed the DCP (North) to provide security to the lawyer, who earlier expressed fear about his safety. The protection will remain in place for now and will be reviewed after 10 days, based on a threat assessment, HC said, seeking the stand of Delhi Bar Association of Tis Hazari, police commissioner and DCP (North). Additional solicitor general Chetan Sharma said if any misconduct is found, it can be looked into by the Bar Council’s disciplinary body. Representing the police, standing counsel Sanjay Lau said action is being taken. The DCP (North) said police will meet with the district judge to review security. HC directed the probe to be conducted by an ACP under the DCP’s supervision.
