‘Protests against UGC equity committees not appropriate’

Lucknow: BSP national president Mayawati on Wednesday said that protests in govt colleges and private universities against the new UGC rule mandating establishment of Equity Committees are not appropriate.“The protests are being held by general category people with a casteist mentality, on the pretext that the provisions are discriminatory against them,” Mayawati said in a post on X.“Opposition to certain provisions of the new rule of the UGC to establish an Equity Committee in govt colleges and private universities, to address caste-based discrimination in the country’s higher education institutions, by those belonging to the general category is not right,” she said. The BSP chief said that her party believed that taking everyone into confidence before implementing such rules was better and did not lead to social tension in the country. “Govts and all institutions must pay attention to this,” she added.Mayawati said that in such cases, Dalits and backward classes should not be misled by the provocative statements of selfish and sellable leaders from these communities.
