PRGI not RNI: New law for registration of newspapers/magazines, Act to come into force from March 1, 2024

New Delhi. The new law for the registration of newspapers has been implemented from March 1, 2024. Now the registration of newspapers and magazines in the country has become even easier because the new law has replaced the Press and Book Registration Act of 1867 and the applicant era! Now the registration of magazines and press magazines will have to be done according to the Registration Act of Press and Magazines PRB Act 2023 and the Registration Rules of Press and Magazines. The new law has replaced the Press and Book Registration Act of the 1867 era.

The Government of India notified in the Gazette

 According to an official statement, the government has notified the Registration of Press and Journals Act, 2023 and its rules in its gazette, as a result of which the Act has come into force from March 1, 2024.

PRGI, not RNI, will fulfill the instructions of the new Act

The registration of your magazine will be done as per the Press and Magazines Registration Act 2013 and the Press and Magazines Registration Rules, 2013. According to the information received, the Press Registrar General of India (PRGI), earlier known as Register of Newspapers of India will carry out the functions of the new Act. The new system will replace the existing manual and paperless process by providing an online system to facilitate the registration of newspapers and other periodicals in the country.

 The new Act provides for an online system to facilitate registration of newspapers and other periodicals in the country. According to official statements, the new system does away with the existing process that involved various stages of approval which caused unnecessary hardship to the people. Earlier, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur launched the online portal of Press Registrar General presssewa.prgi.gov.in for receiving various application forms as per the new Act.

 All applications including information given by the printer to a journal, application for registration for print edition of a foreign journal, application by the publisher for obtaining certificate of registration of a journal, application for amendment in certificate of registration, application for transfer of ownership of journals, submission of annual statement by the administration of the journal and verification of circulation of the journal shall be online. This service portal ensures that the paper crop including paper crop can be provided online with digital payment gateway, tax code based digital certificate for instant download, an online system for providing information by the printing press, title availability, as soon as possible, can be accessed online.
