Lucknow: The Lucknow police commissionerate rolled out ‘Operation Pehchan’, a drive to ensure mandatory registration and verification of tenants.“The initiative, aimed at curbing crime and improving monitoring in residential areas, already resulted in the registration of 13,864 tenants in 2025,” said JCP (L&O), Babloo Kumar.

The police launched awareness drives across all police station areas. Police teams are contacting landlords to educate them about the importance and legal necessity of tenant verification.Public announcements through loudspeakers in residential colonies are also being used to spread awareness, urging residents not to keep tenants without police verification.Zone-wise data shared by the police show that the eastern zone recorded the highest number of registrations at 6,657, followed by the southern zone with 4,928.

The central zone saw 843 registrations, while 904 tenants were registered in the northern zone. The western zone reported 532 registrations. Police teams are carrying out physical verification of registered tenants.Landlords can register tenant details through the Lucknow Police website (lucknowpolice.up.gov.in) or the UPCOP mobile application, officials said.After online registration, the local police station team conducts on-ground verification.The guidelines also require landlords to maintain copies of essential tenant documents. Police warned that legal action will be initiated against landlords if a tenant is found involved in criminal activities and the landlord failed to inform or register the tenant with the police.Special provisions were also outlined for foreign nationals. Landlords renting accommodation to foreign citizens must fill ‘form C’ and inform the local police.
