Dibrugarh: In a traffic enforcement operation conducted ahead of Republic Day celebrations, Golaghat police checked 1,786 vehicles across the district on Friday and detected a staggering 659 violations, while seven road accidents were also reported during the day.The drive, aimed at ensuring road safety, saw police personnel deployed at various checkpoints across Golaghat district. The enforcement action revealed alarming trends in traffic rule violations, with the majority of offenders flouting basic safety regulations.According to data released by the district police, the highest number of violations pertained to riders travelling without helmets, accounting for 498 cases. Additionally, 121 motorists were found driving without seatbelts, while 24 instances of triple riding were detected. The drive also detected five cases of drink driving, seven vehicles with modified silencers, three with tinted glasses, and one instance of wrong-side driving.The operation was conducted across all 21 police stations and outposts in the district, with Golaghat Police Station leading the enforcement efforts by checking 235 vehicles, followed by Jamuguri PS with 175 checks and Bokakhat PS with 147 checks. Other stations including Sarupathar PS, Dakhin Majuli PS, Chungajan PS, Dergaon PS, Numaligarh Rural PS, Barpathar PS, and Kamargaon PS also conducted extensive checking operations.Golaghat senior superintendent of police Rajen Singh stressed the importance of adhering to traffic regulations. “We have conducted this extensive checking operation to ensure the safety of motorists and road users. The number of violations detected is deeply concerning, particularly the high number of helmet and seatbelt violations, which are fundamental safety measures. I strongly appeal to all citizens to follow traffic rules diligently throughout the year. Your safety and the safety of others on the road depends on responsible driving behaviour,” Singh said.The SSP further said the need for public cooperation in maintaining road discipline. “Traffic rules are not meant to inconvenience anyone, they are designed to save lives. We urge vehicle owners and drivers to understand that violations can lead to serious accidents and loss of life,” he added.Fines were imposed on all violators as per the Motor Vehicles Act, and the district police have indicated that such enforcement operations will continue in the coming days to maintain road safety and discipline.
