LUCKNOW: A case has been registered against the husband and in-laws of Hiba Rana, daughter of noted poet Munawwar Rana, following allegations of dowry harassment, assault and the pronouncement of triple talaq, police said. Based on her complaint, Sadatganj police have booked the accused under multiple sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.
According to the FIR, Hiba Rana married Syed Mohd Saqib on December 19, 2013, as per Sunni Muslim customs. Her family allegedly provided substantial dowry at the time of marriage, including gold and diamond jewellery and Rs 10 lakh in cash. The FIR states that soon after the marriage, Hiba Rana was subjected to harassment over additional dowry demands. Saqib and his father allegedly demanded Rs 20 lakh more, and her family complied on several occasions in an attempt to protect her marital life. The complaint further alleges that on April 9, 2025, following an argument, her husband verbally abused her, pronounced triple talaq, and forcibly threw her out of the house. She was also allegedly subjected to physical assault. The FIR also mentions that when her sister, Ayesha Rana alias Tina, visited the in-laws’ house, Saqib allegedly assaulted her as well. During the incident, he is accused of again pronouncing triple talaq, evicting Hiba Rana from the house and locking their two children — Syed Fawaz and Hayyam Fatima — inside a room. Hiba Rana has alleged that the incident caused her severe mental trauma and depression and raised concerns over the safety of her children, stating that she continues to receive threats.(With agency inputs)
