Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, state ministers, and leaders of various political parties paid tribute to AIADMK founder and former chief minister M G Ramachandran to mark the celebration of his 109th birth anniversary on Saturday. Taking to social media, PM Modi shared a video clip of the late AIADMK leader and hailed his contributions. “MGR’s contribution to Tamil Nadu‘s progress is outstanding. Equally noteworthy is his role in popularising Tamil culture. We will always keep working to realise his vision for our society,” Modi said in his post, which was accompanied by a 1.05-minute video highlighting welfare schemes implemented by the MGR-led govt for the uplift of poor and needy.On behalf of Tamil Nadu govt, minister for minorities and non-resident Tamils welfare M S Nasar, Chennai corporation mayor R Priya, and senior officials paid floral tribute to MGR’s statue on the premises of Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University. Vice-chancellor K Narayanasamy and university staff paid their respects as well.Expelled AIADMK leader V K Sasikala visited the MGR memorial along with her supporters and paid tribute to the late leader. TVK leader and actor Vijay took to social media to pay homage.“I pay my respects and express profound admiration to the revolutionary leader MGR on his birth anniversary,” Vijay said, hailing him as a pioneer of welfare schemes for the poor and for following the path laid down by C N Annadurai, empowering common people.
