The University has more than 7,700 trees spread across its campus and has a Miyawaki forest that houses over 4,400 varieties of native and exotic plant species. On Tuesday, District Forest Officer (DFO) Kashyap Shashank Ravi, along with the students and faculty, planted 500 saplings on 4.50 acres of land named as Periyar Pasumai Vanam, in front of the Muthamizh Arignar Kalaignar Research Centre.
Speaking at the function, R. Subramani, a member of the Vice-Chancellor Convener Committee, said that presently, 22% of the university’s 95-acre land is covered by trees and their initiative will increase the total green cover. Students should take responsibility for the trees they plant and care for them during their leisure hours. The university administration has already laid pipelines and appointed two workers to take care of the saplings and ensure their protection, Professor Subramani added.
DFO Kashyap Shashank Ravi said the event not only focused on planting trees but also aimed at rejuvenating biodiversity. Periyar Pasumai Vanam will turn out to be a shelter for birds. Moreover, when students return to the university after a decade, they will experience a sense of pride and nostalgia while witnessing the growth of this forest, the DFO added.
