Over 17.3cr devotees visit Magh Mela in first 22 days

Prayagraj: The Magh Mela’s ongoing success reflects social harmony and discipline, with over 17.3 crore devotees visiting since Jan 3. Though this massive turnout showcases Sanatan Dharma’s growth, it has also posed a challenge for the mela police and administration to maintain efficiency.Mela Akhikari Rishiraj said over 17.3 crore devotees visited the Magh Mela till Achala Saptami on Sunday, the highest so far. This number’s likely to rise after Maghi Purnima and Maha Shivratri.Before the start of the annual religious fair, the mela administration had estimated 12 to 15 crore devotees.The mela police and administration are now gearing up for Maghi Purnima snan (Feb 1). They have decided to focus on crowd and traffic management as the majority of kalpwasis would be leaving the mela campus after spending one month on the banks of the Ganga. Mela authorities are busy chalking out an elaborate plan for the exit of kalpwasis.SP (Magh Mela) Neeraj Pandey credited strict no-vehicle zones, no VIP protocol, more parking spaces, and police monitoring for the smooth flow of devotees. “This led to a record 17.3 crore turnout, thanks to hassle-free movement and transport,” he added. Indian Railways set a new benchmark this year, running over 670 special trains during Magh Mela – a first in its history. This ensured smooth travel for devotees.Similarly, 7,600 buses were operated by UPSRTC from Jan 14 to 23. During this period, over 20 lakh passengers travelled safely.
