Kanpur : District magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh on Tuesday inspected preparations for Makar Sankranti at ghats in the city and directed officials to keep all access roads leading to the ghats encroachment-free.Makar Sankranti festival will be observed on January 15. Earlier, the festival was to be celebrated on January 14, but after considering the advice of pundits, the state government has declared that Makar Sankranti will be observed on January 15.To review preparations, Singh inspected Sarsaiya Ghat and took stock of arrangements related to the convenience, safety and cleanliness of devotees on the spot. During the inspection, the district magistrate, keeping in mind the convenience of women, gave instructions to construct a temporary changing room at the Sarsaiya Ghat. He laid special emphasis on keeping the path from the ghat steps to the bathing area wide, clean and completely encroachment-free. Singh directed the Sarsaiya Ghat committee to install indicator boards. He instructed the officials to deploy sanitation workers at every 50 metres and to fix shift duty.The DM directed the officials to ensure an indicator system by installing iron pipes and ropes at deep places in the river, so that devotees do not go beyond the prescribed limit. Instructions were also given to immediately remove bushes and moss present on the mound of the ghat. The zonal sanitation officer was directed to ensure deployment of sanitation workers .
