Bhubaneswar: An upcoming Odia film has landed in controversy after one of the actors claimed it is based on the 2020 minor rape and murder case in Nayagarh district. The girl’s father on Saturday sought intervention of law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, opposing the release of the film on the ground that it is based on his daughter and was made without their consent. He said the film is being released at a time when the case is pending in Orissa high court and some of the accused are still threatening to kill them. He also urged Harichandan and culture minister Suryabanshi Suraj to verify whether the film is based on his daughter.
Directed by Tripati Kumar Sahu and produced by Sanjay Mohanty, the film is scheduled for release on Jan 30. Lead actor Jyoti Ranjan Nayak during the music release recently told the media that the film is based on the Nayagarh case.Writer Rajani Ranjan refuted the allegations and said there is no reference in the film to the Nayagarh incident and it is based on cases of sexual violence against girls. “It is a story about the family of a child who fight for justice,” he said, adding that Nayak’s comments hold no truth.
