NRS docs remove 2-cm seed lodged in 13-year-old’s airway

Kolkata: In a swift, life-saving intervention, doctors from the department of pulmonary medicine at NRS Hospital removed a large seed — about 2 cm in size — lodged in the airway of a 13-year-old girl, restoring her breathing. The teenager from Birbhum’s Mallarpur was brought to the OPD on Thursday morning after severe shortness of breath for five days and required oxygen support. The girl’s parents said she accidentally ingested a fruit seed a few days earlier. An initial evaluation revealed collapse of the right lung, raising suspicion of an airway obstruction.

A CT scan confirmed the presence of the seed at the opening of the right main bronchus, blocking airflow. The team, led by Jaydip Deb, Pulak Kumar Jana, and Sukanta Kodali, performed a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure called fibre-optic bronchoscopy, used to visualise and treat airway problems. “This case highlights the importance of immediate medical attention after choking episodes,” a doctor said.
