Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation will establish an additional hygienic slaughterhouse in north Chennai at a cost of 25 crore. At present, north Chennai largely relies on the Pullianthope slaughterhouse, which is being modernised at an estimated cost of 50 crore.
“The proposed slaughterhouse is expected to decongest the Pullianthope facility, improve turnaround time for licensed butchers, and enhance compliance with food safety norms. The new facility will incorporate modern hygiene practices, scientific waste disposal systems, and improved lairage and processing sections,” said a senior official with the GCC.The new unit will have dedicated space for drying animal skin, an effluent treatment plant, toilets, and parking facilities. Ward 42 councillor M Renuka said at the recent council meeting, “It will reduce the burden on the existing facility in north Chennai.”Ambed Saravanan, a resident of Pullianthope, said, “The corporation failed to maintain the existing facility in the locality. The civic body should ensure the new slaughterhouse is inspected regularly and maintained well.”An announcement in the 2026-27 budget stated that a new slaughterhouse would be constructed in south Chennai, and the detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared.
