Chikkaballapur: Planning a romantic Valentine’s Day getaway to Nandi Hills? You may have to shelve your plans this year. The popular hill station, a favourite rendezvous point for couples and weekenders from the tech capital, will remain completely shut to visitors on Feb 14, following an order from the Chikkaballapur district administration.Deputy commissioner G Prabhu has directed a total ban on entry citing crowd management and public safety concerns. As a result, love-struck couples hoping to exchange roses or pop the big question amid misty views will be turned away at the gate. “No visitors or private vehicles will be allowed to enter Nandi Hills between 6am and 6pm on Feb 14. Anyone attempting to enter will be sent back from the main gate,” said Ramesh, special officer, Nandi Hills.Officials said the decision has been taken to prevent overcrowding and potential law and order issues on a day that traditionally sees a surge in young visitors and couples. “With a large number of visitors, there is a possibility of unruly behaviour, which could also harm the fragile flora and fauna of the hill station,” Ramesh said, adding that the spike in vehicle movement poses an environmental threat to the area. This is the first time entry to Nandi Hills has been banned specifically on Valentine’s Day. However, similar restrictions were imposed earlier during the New Year celebrations to curb massive crowds.Located about 70km from Bengaluru, Nandi Hills has witnessed a steady rise in footfall over the past few years, thanks to its cool climate and pleasant weather. According to officials, the hill station sees an average of 3,000 to 4,000 visitors on weekdays, while weekend numbers often cross 10,000. Long weekends and festival days further strain the security and crowd-control arrangements.Authorities have advised those planning a Valentine’s Day visit to either explore alternative destinations or put off their trip by a few days.
