The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has implemented a key update to the FASTag system that will make things easier for car owners. From February 1, 2026, vehicle owners will no longer need to complete the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process when applying for a new FASTag for cars, jeeps and vans. The move is aimed at cutting down delays and making toll payments smoother for everyday highway users.
KYV scrapped for FASTag: What is the rule change about
Until now, vehicle owners often had to go through KYV checks even after their FASTag was issued and activated. These checks carried out after FASTag activation often created problems for vehicle owners. In many cases, refunds were held up and motorists had to make repeated follow-ups, even though they had already submitted valid registration documents while buying the FASTag. With the new rule in place, this extra step has been done away with.Under the revised process, banks issuing FASTags will now handle vehicle verification at the time of activation itself. This means that once a FASTag is issued and activated, users will not be asked to complete KYV again. By shifting responsibility to banks, NHAI expects the overall system to become faster, more reliable and easier for motorists to use.
The change also applies to existing FASTags already issued for cars. Routine KYV checks will no longer be carried out. Verification will only be required in specific situations, such as complaints related to loose FASTags, incorrect issuance or suspected misuse. In the absence of such issues, car owners will not need to go through any additional checks.Stay tuned to TOI Auto for latest updates on the automotive sector and do follow us on our social media handles on Facebook, Instagram and X.
