Pune: State cabinet minister and BJP MLA Chandrakant Patil on Monday said the outcome of zilla parishad and panchayat samiti elections showed opposition alliances like MVA had “no real presence” in western Maharashtra. “Results of local self-governing bodies prove that there is no existence of opposition parties like MVA in western Maharashtra,” Patil said while addressing reporters after the election of mayor and deputy mayor at Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Responding to accusations that BJP lured MVA members to secure victories, Patil said the party did not engineer defections. “Instead, leaders from other parties chose to join BJP after understanding the situation,” he said, while criticising the opposition. “They lacked the drive to work hard. They opposed BJP merely for the sake of opposing and frequently created hurdles in development projects,” he said.Patil said traffic congestion remained Pune’s biggest challenge, suggesting that the city needed tunnel-based solutions for traffic management. “Projects like the proposed tunnel from Shaniwarwada to Swargate may receive state govt funding in the upcoming budget. Plans for new flyovers and improved road networks are also being considered to address traffic snarls,” he said.Patil also highlighted the growing concern over water supply, given the city’s rapidly rising population. “The administration and newly elected representatives must work toward boosting Pune’s water availability,” he added.
