Kanpur: Police arrested a murder accused from Koyla Nagar, Chakeri, after 35 years. The accused, Shaukat, was wanted in a case of shooting a man dead due to rivalry between two wrestlers and had been absconding since 1990.
A reward of Rs 50,000 was announced for him, the police said on Monday.DCP (Central) Atul Kumar Srivastava said at a press conference here on Monday that in 1984, Shaukat had shot dead a man named Sultan in Khudare Dadra Rasoolpur Khan of Gonda district due to rivalry between groups of two wrestlers. He said police registered a case against Shaukat on the complaint of family members and sent him to jail, after which he was transferred to Gonda jail.In 1990, Shaukat absconded after getting bail, the DCP said. He said Shaukat had given his address as Chamanganj, where he lived on rent, but despite extensive search by the police, his whereabouts could not be traced.After this, on 20 January 2026, Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal announced a reward of Rs 50,000 on Shaukat. The two teams were deployed to search for the murder accused, and four mobile numbers of the accused’s family members came up during the investigation, the DCP said.Following this, Shaukat was arrested from Koyla Nagar, Chakeri. He came to Kanpur after a long time and was going to a relative’s house who is a resident of Chakeri, the DCP said.Shaukat is currently about 70 years old and is running a vegetable cart in Gonda while hiding his identity. He was living in Gonda under a changed name and earning his livelihood by running a vegetable cart, the DCP said.
