Mumbai: A year-old baby boy died and his 68-year-old grandmother sustained injuries after the duo was knocked down by a school bus on Tuesday noon at Khetwadi area in Girgaum. Police have detained the bus driver and he will be arrested, said police.The incident took place at around 12.15 pm. “The school bus arrived in front of the Nirmal Niketan building in Khetwadi to drop / pick up school children. At this time, Chandrakala Shivram Vyas, a 68-year-old woman residing in the area, had gone to drop her granddaughter to the same school bus. She was also carrying her one-year-old grandson in her arms,” said a police source.
Vyas’ granddaughter got into the bus. After dropping her, Vyas was crossing the road in front of the bus. This is when the driver moved the bus forward and allegedly ran over the baby boy. Vyas sustained injuries too. The bus stopped and the locals gathered. The injured persons were immediately taken to a nearby hospital where doctors pronounced the baby boy dead. Vyas is undergoing treatment. Vyas’ son has a ceramics shop.The bus driver, identified as Sambhaji Vakhare (46), has been taken into custody and legal proceedings are going on, said police. The D B Marg police are probing the case. The police also took the driver to the hospital and his blood samples were collected to establish if he was drunk. The report is awaited. The driver has been driving the school bus for the last 10 years, said an officer. The driver may be booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the BNS and dangerous driving under the MV act. Investigators have also obtained the CCTV footage of the area.
