Mumbai: The reconstructed sky walk at Bandra (East) between Bandra Railway station (East) and Kalanagar Junction on the Western Express Highway at Bandra (East)was thrown open on Monday. The new skywalk has been constructed for the convenience of citizens commuting between Bandra station, Bandra Court, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), MHADA and District Collector’s office at Bandra (East). Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar, who inaugurated the skywalk, said pedestrians will be provided great relief as the skywalk has direct connectivity to the foot over bridge of the Bandra Railway Station and helps in crossing the road safely at the Western Express Highway. This skywalk will make pedestrian movement in the Bandra (East) area safer and save travel time and help significantly reduce congestion on Anant Kanekar Road, Shelar stated. The new sky walk from Bandra Railway Station (East) to Kalanagar Junction on the Western Express Highway is 680 meters long and has an average width of 5.40 meters. There are four staircases for easy access for pedestrians from various locations and two escalators have been added for convenient navigation. The civic body has also installed 14 CCTV cameras for security and surveillance. Special care had to be taken while carrying out construction of the sky walk due to the limited time period during mid night for construction because of heavy traffic on the Western Express Highway, pedestrian rush on Anant Kanekar Road below the sky walk, and relocation of utility lines among various challenges, yet the sky walk work was completed within the stipulated time period, Shelar said.
