Mumbai police file FIR against 17 residents of Sanjay Gandhi National Park for protests against demolition

Mumbai: Kasturba Marg police in Borivli have filed an FIR against 17 residents of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, including eight adivasis, following protests against the demolition of their houses at Navapada on Monday.The FIR was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 125, 324(2), 189(2), 189(4), 190, 191(1), 191(3) and 3(5), for endangering lives, unlawful assembly, rioting, and shared criminal purpose, among others. However, local adivasis said one of the women named in the FIR is in the ICU, another was at work, and a third was an onlooker standing with her two children.On Sunday and Monday, forest officials went around the padas, informing residents of the imminent demolition of houses of those who were provided tenements at Chandivli. As word spread, adivasis began gathering in large numbers, afraid all homes would be demolished. The protests led to the state government staying the demolition. State forest minister Ganesh Naik assured there would be a meeting with the chief minister before any decision is taken.
