Mumbai police detain domestic help for abandoning her newborn baby girl in Khar building

Mumbai: Khar police detained a 20-year-old woman domestic help for allegedly abandoning her newborn baby girl in the open space of the refuge room between the 14th and 15th floors of the Om Nirman building in Khar (West) on Sunday.The information was received by constable Sheetal Mengade at 10.30 am when building resident Varun Raheja called a Nirbhaya Officer posted at Khar Police Station. “A newborn baby has been placed in a plastic bag in the open space of the refuge space where he resides, and this was told to him by his housekeeping boy. After being asked to check, Raheja went to the location and confirmed the newborn was alive,” said police. The officer informed day shift supervisor assistant police inspector Santosh Kanse and station house officer police sub-inspector Vijay Said, and went to the scene with them.According to Khar police, the woman constable identified as Sheetal Satish Mengade recieved a call from the resident of the building informing her that a newborn baby had been placed in a plastic bag and left in the refuge area, which was found by his housekeeping boy.When Mengade asked the resident to go to the location and see the newborn baby, he confirmed that the newborn baby was alive. After that, Mengade informed Kanse, who reached the spot and rushed the girl to Bhabha Hospital, where doctors examined her and admitted her for treatment.Police said Kanse and Said conducted an inquiry during which a woman identified as Mrs. Pramila Sukhiram Tirki, working as a domestic helper in the same building on the 15th floor, gave birth to the newborn girl at 4 am before she abandoned the baby. Police said she stated that since she was unmarried, she abandoned the newborn by placing her in a garbage bag and leaving her in the open space of the refuge room between the 14th and 15th floors of the building.The 20-year-old mother has been booked under BNS for abandonment.
