Margao: A team from the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) conducted a late-night operation against garbage dumping that resulted in four offenders being caught red-handed and fined a total of Rs 40,000.
The operation, which ran from 10pm to 2am, targeted black spots where CCTV cameras captured regular dumping activity but could not clearly identify the offenders due to obscured number plates.Municipal engineer Deepak Faldessai said the rationale behind the night drive, “The CCTV cameras installed at various black spots had captured some two-wheelers regularly dumping large amounts of waste at this spot near ND Naik workshop on Arlem-Fatorda road, but as their number plates could not be clearly captured, the offenders could not be identified.”During the operation, the MMC team nabbed multiple offenders in the act of illegal dumping. The heaviest penalty of Rs 25,000 was imposed on those found dumping hotel waste transported in a vehicle. Other offenders were fined between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000.One case involved a person from Raia who arrived with hotel waste and contested the Rs 25,000 fine. “He entered into an argument after we asked him to pay Rs 25,000. We referred the case to the Fatorda police station, which seized the vehicle. It will be released once the fine is paid to the MMC,” Faldessai said. The municipal engineer added that MMC has written to the Fatorda police station, providing a list of vehicles caught on CCTV cameras at various black spots and requesting them to trace and take action against the offenders.
