MLA Basavaraj in 7-day police custody

Bengaluru: KR Pura MLA BA Basavaraj, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the murder of rowdy-sheeter Biklu Shiva, has been remanded in seven days of police custody.He was produced before the 42nd Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) at a residence in Koramangala Sunday afternoon after being discharged from Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research. The CID has taken him into custody and begun interrogation.According to special public prosecutor Ashok Nayak, doctors conducted multiple tests and the detailed report and discharge summary stated that Basavaraj’s condition is normal and that he’s medically fit. The report was handed over to CID officials and produced before the magistrate.Basavaraj was produced around 12.30pm. During arguments in open court following his arrest, the SPP sought custodial interrogation and the CID requested nine days of custody. Basavaraj’s counsel objected to the request. After hearing both sides, the magistrate remanded him in seven days of police custody and directed CID officials to produce him before the court by 1pm on Feb 21.Basavaraj’s advocate also requested that he be allowed the food prescribed by doctors. The magistrate issued directions to the CID accordingly. If he seeks home-cooked food, a separate application must be filed.The CID had produced Basavaraj and advocate Ajit separately before the court Friday. His counsel informed the court that Basavaraj had heart-related issues, following which the court directed the CID to provide medical assistance and shift him to Jayadeva. The CID had earlier arrested 18 people in Shiva’s murder. With the arrest of Basavaraj and Ajit, the total number of arrests has risen to 20.
