Mechanised parking & food plaza to come up at Assi ghat

Varanasi: The Varanasi Municipal Corporation is bringing a mechanised multi-level parking facility with an investment of Rs 9.84 crores. Construction of a food plaza is also in progress with Rs 2.14 crores to enable visitors to enjoy Banarasi delicacies.Talking to TOI on Saturday, municipal commissioner Himanshu Nagpal said that work on both projects was in progress at an accelerated pace, and they will be ready to be operational in the next four months. Nagpal, who inspected both sites on Friday evening, said the plan for mechanised multi-level car parking at Assi Ghat materialised in view of the increasing load of vehicles reaching there with pilgrims and tourists. The unavailability of sufficient parking space meant problems such as traffic choking remained evident there. These projects come under the Chief Minister Global City Development Scheme (CM-VGNY).Strengthening and beautification of the city’s infrastructure is the corporation’s priority, considering the number of tourists and devotees, he said, adding that the main objective of constructing mechanised parking is to reduce vehicle pressure at Assi Ghat and provide a permanent solution to the parking problem. The modern food plaza will enable domestic and foreign tourists who come to enjoy Assi’s morning ambience to relish Banarasi cuisine. The municipal commissioner also inspected the raw pumping station located in Bhadaini. While closely examining the pumping station premises, he directed Water Works department officials to immediately start beautification work across the entire premises. He said that centres related to the city’s water management should also be clean and organised. During this, the Chief Engineer (Civil), GM (Water Works) and Assistant Engineer of CNDS, along with other officials, were present at the site.
