MCD zone names set to be aligned with revenue districts

New Delhi: The names of the 12 zones of MCD are set to be aligned with the names of Delhi govt’s revenue districts. An official order on this is expected soon. The proposal has already received MCD’s approval. Sources said Delhi govt will finalise the names in consultation with district magistrates and then forward the proposal to the Union ministry of home affairs, which is likely to notify the changes shortly. “Either the existing zone name will be adopted for the district or the district name will be given to the zone to bring uniformity. The proposal will then be sent to the Centre,” an official said. At present, MCD has 12 zones, while Delhi has 13 revenue districts as New Delhi is a separate revenue district under New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). Officials clarified that while the renaming is aimed at simplifying administrative processes for govt and residents, there is no proposal to alter the jurisdiction or boundaries of the municipal zones. “Both Delhi govt and MCD deal with administrative work, and bringing uniformity in the jurisdiction or boundaries of districts and zones will also bring greater consonance in actions taken and decisions finalised across areas. For instance, during anti-encroachment drives or while calling meetings to hold an event in a district, there will be no confusion about which officials need to participate. This will also streamline processes for residents, who currently often have to run from pillar to post to get work done. In many cases, a person has to approach one district or sometimes even two different zones to get work done,” an official said. Currently, most areas under the Old Delhi revenue district correspond with the City Sadar–Paharganj zone of the MCD. Likewise, the Central district largely overlaps with the Karol Bagh zone, while Outer Delhi district includes areas falling under the Narela zone. The East district corresponds mostly with Shahdara South zone areas, and the North-East district aligns with Shahdara North zone areas. Areas under the South district fall within the South zone, while the majority of the West district areas come under the West zone. The Central North district, which includes Shakur Basti, Shalimar Bagh and Model Town subdivisions, largely falls under the Keshavpuram zone. The South-West district comprises Najafgarh, Matiala, Dwarka and Bijwasan subdivisions, most of which fall under the Najafgarh zone. The North-West district includes Kirari, Nangloi Jat and Rohini areas, which fall under the Rohini zone — making it a likely candidate to be renamed after the district. Similarly, the South-East district includes Jangpura, Kalkaji and Badarpur subdivisions, with most of these areas falling under the Central zone of the MCD.
