MC re-tenders leachate treatment plant project at Dadumajra dumping site

Chandigarh: As the Chandigarh municipal corporation has received a single bid to set up a leachate treatment plant (LTP) at the Daddumajra dumping site, the authority was forced to re-tender the project. With the project under NGT watch, the authority gave March 6 as the last date to apply for the tender. The LTP project has a capacity of 250 KLD (kilolitres per day) and is expected to cost around Rs 4-5 crore.“Only one agency has qualified the parameters of the bid and since the single bid cannot be considered for execution , we have re-tendered the project by giving only 10 days’ time to the bidders to apply for the same. We are hopeful that this time the project will witness good competition,” an MC official said. The MC has already identified four kanal land for this ambitious project, which was planned at the tail-end area of the Daddumajra dumping site. According to the plan, under waste management at the Daddumajra dumping site, the entire generated liquid waste of the dumping site will first be brought to this newly planned LTP through a dedicated drain. The matter was also discussed with the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) in the past, and the CPCC can also technically assess all parameters of the project. The expenditure on the project will be covered by the ring-fenced amount for management of solid and liquid waste, which is kept as per the directions of the NGT, sources have revealed. With this project, the entire liquid waste and leachate of the Daddumajra dumping ground will be brought to the ETP through the dedicated drain. After processing , the treated water will be drained into the sewage line as per the laid-down process. The project is also crucial from the local residents’ point of view, as thousands of locals in the Daddumajra area face the problem of seepage of liquid waste from the dumping site into residential areas, especially during the rainy season.
