Manali bus terminal redevelopment commences

Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) began demolition work at Manali bus terminal to pave the way for a modern two-storey facility with improved passenger amenities, including shops and upgraded waiting areas. Officials said the redevelopment aimed to enhance commuter comfort, streamline bus movement, and cater to growing passenger demand in north Chennai. The modern bus terminal, developed under the ‘Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam’, is designed to handle higher passenger traffic. It will include six bus bays, parking space for 48 two-wheelers, a feeding room, separate toilets for passengers and staff, and a room for drivers and conductors. “We expect the project to be completed within six months. The revamped terminal will also have CCTV cameras and a police booth for passenger safety, which are not present in the existing terminal,” said Manali zonal officer K Devendiran.

A temporary bus terminal was set up near the existing one to ensure the continuous operation of MTC buses, as shifting it to another area would cause inconvenience to passengers. As only 10 MTC buses are on standby at the terminal, there was no necessity to shift it elsewhere. “The layout was designed to ensure comfort for passengers waiting for buses. Nine shops will be constructed on the first and second floors and will be rented out by the corporation. These will include retail shops, a photocopy shop, and an ATM. To prevent waterlogging during the monsoon season, the civic body will also construct a stormwater drain as part of the project,” said a consultant.Residents welcomed the bus terminal redevelopment project, which has been a long-standing demand. “The modernized terminal will benefit passengers. Authorities should also ensure proper maintenance and prevent encroachments by vendors inside the terminal. The project should be completed within the stipulated time,” said T K Shanmugam of the federation of North Chennai residents’ welfare association.
