Man who sold 40 cars posing as bank officer held in Arunachal

Itanagar: A fraudster who posed as a bank’s cluster head and allegedly duped buyers by selling over 40 cars under the guise of bank e-auctions has been arrested in Arunachal Pradesh’s Naharlagun, where police have so far recovered 15 luxury vehicles linked to the scam, officials said.Police in Arunachal Pradesh’s Naharlagun have recovered luxury vehicles linked to multiple fraud cases involving one Rupjyoti Das (38), a resident of Dathgaon in Guwahati, an official said on Wednesday.

Naharlagun-Itanagar Capital Region SP Nyelam Nega said a police team led by SDPO Rishi Longdo seized the vehicles following a case registered against Das at Naharlagun Police Station under Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Das is currently in custody at Naharlagun Police Station in connection with the case.The recovered vehicles include one Toyota Fortuner, seven Scorpio S11s, two XUV300s, two Kia Seltos, one Brezza, one Creta, one Jimny, and one Bolero.According to police, Das allegedly posed as a bank’s cluster head, claiming the vehicles were part of genuine bank e-auctions. He reportedly acquired around 71 vehicles on rent from Assam, paid rent for a few months to build trust, and then fraudulently sold more than 40 of them to buyers in Arunachal Pradesh, promising documents later.All recovered vehicles have been handed over to Assam police or rightful owners after due legal process, the official said.A further probe is underway to recover more vehicles and identify additional victims. The SP has urged the public to verify documents with transport authorities, banks, and police before making financial transactions to avoid such fraud.
