Man who set himself ablaze at SHRC dies

Chennai: A differently abled man, who set himself on fire at the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) office in Raja Annamalaipuram, succumbed to his injuries on Friday.The deceased, identified as Albert, 30, was from Virudhunagar. A person with disabilities, he was temporarily residing in a house on Second Main Road, Velachery. Albert came to the SHRC office on Greenways Road on Thursday to file a complaint. There, he suddenly poured petrol on himself and set himself on fire.Albert suffered 65% burns and was admitted to Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) Hospital for treatment.A judicial magistrate from the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Egmore also recorded his dying declaration. Meanwhile, Albert succumbed to his injuries early on Friday morning.According to Abiramapuram police, a cybercrime complaint was registered against Albert two months ago in Virudhunagar in connection with a financial dispute involving 1.75 lakh. Police said he assured the complainant that the amount would be repaid by Jan 27, but failed to do so.The Abiramapuram police are investigating whether he committed suicide due to pressure arising from a fraud complaint filed against him by a woman.
