Varanasi: In the case of a mentally challenged beggar killed in Ramgarh market under Pannuganj police station on Jan 27, police arrested Vikas Kumar Chero alias Vicky in Sonbhadra district, on Wednesday. Chero confessed he murdered the beggar to loot his money.Sonbhadra SP Abhishek Verma said after the body of mentally challenged beggar, Mangaru (35), was found in Ramgarh market under Pannuganj police station on Jan 28, several teams were put on the case. During investigation, police received clues regarding involvement of Chero of Kewal village in Kone area and arrested him from the Majhgain culvert on Karwaniya canal on Tuesday night. Police recovered Mangru’s jacket, trousers, shoes and a piece of glass, which was used to slit Mangru’s throat. During interrogation, Chero confessed he had earlier committed several thefts but was never caught. He lived with his wife, Lakshmi, at his in-laws’ place in Raiya Gosai. At Ramgarh market on Jan 27, he noticed Mangru, counting money he received in alms and putting in his pocket.When Mangru was asleep near a school building at night, the accused tried to take the money from his pocket. When Mangru woke up and caught Chero’s hand, Chero took out a sharp-edged piece of glass and struck Mangru’s throat, killing him on the spot and fled the scene with the stolen money. TNN
