Kanpur: Chaos erupted at the Collectorate premises here on Monday morning around 10 O’clock when a man and his brother attempted self-immolation by pouring diesel on themselves. Security personnel present at the spot acted swiftly and caught both of them, snatching the diesel bottles from their hands, thereby averting a major tragedy.Upon receiving information, police force reached the spot, took both into custody and started interrogation. During questioning, they were identified as Padam Singh and Moti Singh. Both were said to be residents of the Awas Vikas area located in Naubasta, while they were originally residents of Maitha in Kanpur Dehat.Both told the police that some strongmen had encroached upon their land in Naubasta Awas Vikas. Regarding this, they had complained several times to officials and also submitted a petition on the chief minister’s portal, but no solution was found. It was alleged that frustrated by continuous neglect, they tried to take a step like self-immolation. Police were interrogating both and the matter was being investigated.ACP Kotwali Ashutosh Kumar Singh said that on Monday at the district magistrate office premises, Moti Singh, son of Raghunath Singh resident of village Maitha, district Kanpur Dehat, along with his family members, attempted self-immolation by pouring kerosene oil on himself.Upon receiving information, the police force present at the spot immediately stopped him from doing so and ensured necessary security. Subsequently, he was taken before the Revenue Department officers and the district magistrate’s office for dialogue and grievance redressal.The person alleged that approximately nine bighas of his land had been occupied by his co-sharers and some family members. In this regard, no application or written complaint was submitted by him to the police either previously or till today’s date. “Investigations meanwhile are continuing in this regard,” said ACP further.
