Jaipur: A 25-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for mowing down a group of cyclists with a speeding car shortly after midnight in Vidyadhar Nagar, killing two workers and injuring several others in a hit-and-run.Deputy Commissioner of Police North Karan Sharma identified the accused driver as Amit Chauhan, a resident of Harmada.SHO Himmat Singh said that the deceased were identified as Devdat Behera alias Tappu (31) and Amulya Patra (55), both natives of Odisha who were living as tenants in Jalupura.Singh said police received information at Vidyadhar Nagar police station around 12.05 am on Wednesday that a car was driven at high speed near the service lane and ran over several cyclists before fleeing. A man died on the spot, while three to four others were critically injured.When police teams reached the scene, they found four damaged bicycles, blood splattered across the road, and a broken number plate bearing registration number RJ-14 CG 6812. The injured were rushed to hospital, where one of them later succumbed during treatment.Based on the number plate recovered from the spot, police traced the vehicle owner as Ashok Kumar Tak, a resident of Malviya Nagar. The driver was also later tracked and arrested.A case was registered and special teams were formed to track down the suspect. Singh said that the accused worked as a photographer, and he was sent for a medical examination to ascertain whether he was under the influence of some intoxicant while driving the vehicle. Further investigation is underway.
