Kanpur: A major fire erupted in a fifth-floor apartment at Sai Villa in Govindnagar early Monday morning after a lamp in the home temple toppled over, officials said. The fire spread to a wooden wardrobe and bed in the room and later reached the rooftop. No casualties were reported.Local residents alerted the Govindnagar police and the fire brigade after seeing the flames. Three fire brigade vehicles arrived and controlled the fire within an hour.Rajiv Chopra, a resident of Sai Villa in Govindnagar H Block, said he lived on the fifth floor with his family. He said that on Monday morning his brother-in-law Manoj Kumar, from Dabauli, had passed away and he was planning to go to Dabauli with his wife Neelima. He said his son Abhijit, daughter Rashika, mother Shakuntala Rani and sister Shashiwal were at home at the time.He said a wooden temple in their home had a burning lamp, which fell due to a mouse and ignited the wooden wardrobe nearby.Residents also notified the mini control room in Fazalganj. Three fire trucks from Fazalganj and Kidwai Nagar fire stations arrived and began firefighting efforts. The fire was brought under control in about an hour.Chief Fire Officer Deepak Sharma said that after receiving the fire alert, three fire units led by the CFO Kanpur arrived, extinguished the fire and safely evacuated everyone from the building.
