Leopard mauls 8-year-old to death in Katarniaghat

Lucknow: An eight-year-old boy was mauled to death by a leopard in Nishad Nagar village under the Katarniaghat Wildlife Division in Bahraich district on Wednesday evening. Subhash, 8, was playing outside his house when a leopard suddenly emerged from the nearby forest, grabbed the child in its jaws, and attempted to flee towards the jungle. Hearing the boy’s screams, villagers raised an alarm and rushed to the spot, forcing the wild animal to abandon the child in an injured condition before escaping. Subhash was rushed to a nearby private medical facility, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Following the attack, fear spread across the village, particularly among families living close to the forest.

Residents expressed concern over frequent wildlife movement in the area and demanded urgent preventive measures.Forest range officer Ashish Gaur said that after confirmation of the leopard attack, a team led by forest guard was dispatched to the spot. The team is assessing the situation and monitoring the movement of the leopard in the area. The forest department has advised villagers to remain alert and avoid venturing out alone, especially after dusk. Additional surveillance measures are also being considered to ensure the safety of residents living near the forest boundary.
