Late wet spell flips January rainfall: Gurgaon at 90% surplus, Haryana at 45%

Gurgaon: On account of the single late-month wet spell, rainfall across Haryana moved into surplus. After a largely dry start to Jan, the state has recorded a 45% cumulative excess now, even as several districts remained near-normal or deficient. District-wise data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) shows Haryana received 19.7mm of rain between Jan 1 and 29, against a normal of 13.6 mm.In Gurgaon, cumulative rainfall now stands at 19mm compared to a normal of 10mm, marking a 90% surplus for the month so far. Gurgaon’s January rainfall was driven almost entirely by the late-month spell, with 18.9mm recorded between Jan 23 and 29 alone, a 529% weekly departure.Kurukshetra emerged as the wettest district in cumulative terms, recording 52mm against a normal of 17.4mm, a 199% excess.Ambala followed with 56.1mm (110%), while Bhiwani logged 21.3mm against 9.8mm (117%). Chandigarh received 63.6mm so far this month, translating to an 85% surplus. Several districts moved into surplus despite relatively modest monthly totals. Panipat recorded 32.9mm (89%), Jhajjar 15.5mm (82%), Fatehabad 23.8mm (80%), Kaithal 26.4mm (71%) and Panchkula 44.8mm (50%).Across south Haryana, cumulative rainfall remained uneven. Faridabad stood at 11.9mm against a normal of 11.8mm, effectively near-normal, while Palwal recorded 11.6mm (47%), Rewari 10.5mm (42%), Nuh9.4 mm (16%) and Rohtak 15.8mm (17%), indicating that much of the region’s monthly gains were driven primarily by last week’s showers. In contrast, Sirsa continued to face a sharp deficit, recording just 3.2mm against a normal of 8.1mm, a shortfall of 60%, making it the most rain-deficient district so far this month. Mahendragarh was also in the red at -13%, while Sonepat remained 28% below normal and Charkhi Dadri was marginally deficient at -2%. Weekly data highlights the intensity of the late-Jan system, with Kurukshetra posting a 654% departure, Ambala 633%, Chandigarh 626% and Gurgaon 529% between Jan 23 and 29.
