Ahmedabad: A late-night Sunday joyride turned chaotic near Shilaj on the SP Ring Road after an allegedly drunk car driver rammed into as many as nine vehicles, triggering panic among motorists and residents. The accused, a 55-year-old resident of Gandhinagar, was detained by M Division traffic police following complaints filed by victims and eyewitnesses.The incident occurred around 8.45pm on the stretch between Montecristo and the Shilaj Bridge on the Sola–Bopal Road corridor. According to police, the driver lost control of the car at high speed and first hit a two-wheeler before crashing into a series of parked and moving vehicles.One of the complainants, Sobendra Dubey (29), a salesman with a real estate firm, told police that he was riding a friend’s motorcycle when the car hit him from behind, throwing him onto the road. Dubey sustained injuries to his knees, forehead, left hand and back, and was shifted to Sola Civil Hospital for treatment. His motorcycle suffered damage estimated at around Rs 25,000.Eyewitnesses claimed the driver showed clear signs of intoxication and could barely stand after stepping out of the car. Videos circulating on social media showed the man staggering and repeatedly losing his balance as angry locals surrounded him. He was eventually restrained and handed over to the police.Police said the accused also sustained minor injuries and was taken for a medical examination to confirm intoxication. “Preliminary inquiry suggests the driver was under the influence of alcohol and driving recklessly,” a traffic police official said.Though no fatalities were reported, several vehicles were badly damaged and traffic on the busy ring road was disrupted for some time. M Division traffic police registered a case against the car driver based on multiple complaints and are further investigating the matter.
