Lalduhoma opens areca nut processing unit

Aizawl: Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma on Friday inaugurated an areca nut processing unit established by SSB Agro at Buhchangphai village in Kolasib district, bordering Assam.Addressing the gathering, the CM said Mizoram has around 30,000 hectares under areca nut cultivation, with an estimated production of about two lakh quintals during 2024–25. Recognising areca nut as a stable and profitable source of livelihood for farmers, he said the state govt continues to support the sector’s expansion through schemes such as the flagship Handholding Scheme and the CM’s Special Package.

He said large-scale loss of areca nut trees since 2021 was due to water stress and nutrient deficiency, as assessed by scientists from the CPCRI, reports HC Vanlalruata.Emphasising the need for improved plantation management, the CM stressed the importance of water conservation and scientific cultivation practices.Highlighting the govt’s strong action against illegal areca nut trade, Lalduhoma said such measures have significantly improved market conditions for local farmers. He also underlined the importance of local processing to ensure better prices for growers. Govt-run areca nut processing units are currently under construction at Chemphai in Kolasib district and Zamuang in Mamit district bordering Tripura, and are expected to be operational next year.State agriculture minister PC Vanlalruata, who was also present, emphasised that processing adds value to agricultural produce and helps ensure stable markets for growers. He added that similar processing initiatives are being planned for other crops such as ginger, turmeric and chilli.
