Lucknow: Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute on Saturday launched a liquid-based cytology (LBC) facility for cervical cancer screening. Director Prof MLB Bhatt inaugurated the facility.The LBC method preserves collected cervical cell samples in a liquid medium before laboratory processing, unlike a conventional Pap smear in which cells are placed directly on a slide.Prof Bhatt said the technique could improve the reliability of cervical cancer screening and diagnosis and support clinical decision-making.The institute’s pathology department head Dr Deepti Mishra said the method improves sample quality and helps identify cellular changes.She said HPV testing can be carried out from the same sample when required, reducing the need for repeat sample collection.The institute also organised a workshop on LBC sample collection, preservation and processing.Doctors, faculty members and technical staff from the obstetrics and gynaecology-oncology and pathology departments participated in the training programme.
