Bengaluru: Following the recent Supreme Court order on implementing 25% quota for students from economically weaker sections (EWS) under Right to Education (RTE), the govt said it will study the issue to decide whether the rules need to be amended. Senior officials said the matter needs to be discussed with the chief minister as financial implications are involved.
Section 12(1)(c) of RTE mandates that private unaided non-minority schools must set aside 25% of seats for students from underprivileged backgrounds and state govts will reimburse schools for the costs incurred.Karnataka later amended the rule, whereby parents could apply for RTE quota in private unaided schools only if there were no neighbourhood govt schools. With this, the number of students under RTE quota reduced from around 1.2 lakh in 2012 to 3,412 in 2024.On Jan 13, the Supreme Court issued a series of directions asking states to effectively implement the quota.
