Karnataka cops nab Kolkata admission racket kingpin in 3.5L fraud

Kolkata: The Karnataka Police arrested the head of an agency, Sayan Basu, from the Jadavpur area during a night operation on Monday in connection to an alleged Rs 3.5 lakh overseas admission fraud. The arrest was made based on the complaint lodged by a Karnataka student there. The victim alleged that he was duped on the pretext of offering admission into US colleges and universities at reduced fees through purported tie-ups, police said. Police found the money trail linked to a Kolkata bank account.Police said the student, who learnt about the agency through an ad, was told to submit educational certificates. Basu allegedly assured of arranging admission. Police said the agency then organised a ‘home-based Graduate Record Examination’. After being told that he passed, the student was allegedly asked to deposit money, police said. The student alleged he was given a Visa document by the agency after passport handover. He learnt from embassy no visa was issued.. Probe is on. tnn
