Bengaluru: A city court held Power TV, represented by its managing director Rakesh Shetty, guilty in a contempt of court case and ordered his detention for three months in prison.The case pertained to a complaint filed by senior IPS officer BR Ravikante Gowda, who approached the court stating that, despite an injunction restraining Shetty from airing unconfirmed or derogatory news against him, defamatory programmes had been aired again.In his petition, Gowda stated that a local court in Bengaluru had issued the injunction on Sep 8, 2023, against the Kannada channel, prohibiting it from telecasting any defamatory or unconfirmed news against Gowda. However, on Sep 22, 2023, it beamed a news item on Gowda, terming him “dushta IPS adhikari.”Gowda filed a contempt of court case. While passing the order, judge Abdul Saleem said Shetty should be detained for three months in civil prison as a consequence of disobedience and the petitioner should deposit a subsistence allowance, as fixed by the state govt, to meet the expenses. According to court order, the deposit of the allowance should be carried out on Jan 31.
