MOHALI: Karan Defaulter, the main shooter in the murder of kabaddi promoter Rana Balachauriya, was shot dead in a police encounter on Tuesday morning. The encounter took place on Airport Road in village Roorkhi Kham, near the cricket stadium in the Mullanpur area of New Chandigarh. The encounter, which began around 7 a.m., lasted for about half an hour.According to police, Karan Defaulter was armed with a .30-bore pistol. He fired six to seven rounds at the police, while the police retaliated with approximately nine rounds. Karan was shot in the crossfire. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died. SSP Hans confirmed this.It was reported that Karan escaped from police custody on Friday night. He was in the custody of CIA staff and was being taken to recover a .30-bore pistol. He feigned chest pains. While he was being taken to Kharar Hospital for treatment, he attacked a police officer with his handcuffs and escaped from the scene. Police officer Jaswinder was injured in this attack. An FIR was registered at Kharar police station last night regarding Karan’s escape, while a separate FIR is being filed regarding the encounter.According to the SSP, Karan remained at large for six to seven hours. On Tuesday morning, information was received that he was in the Mullanpur area, following which the police laid a trap. During the siege, Karan opened fire, prompting the police to retaliate.After Karan’s escape, police teams from Mohali, Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, and Ropar Ranges were engaged in searching for him. Police are now investigating who helped Karan escape from custody. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
