Jaipur: Traders in Jaipur have raised objections to Urban Development (UD) tax notices issued by the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC), saying demands were sent even to establishments smaller than 100 sq yards in markets including Chaura Rasta, Tripolia Bazaar, Johari Bazaar and MI Road.Traders said many of the properties are exempt under existing rules, but notices showed dues running into lakhs of rupees. Some notices also cited dues dating back to 2007, including for shops purchased later.Jaipur Vyapar Mahasangh President Subhash Goyal said, “Even a 33 sq yards shop is receiving notices. Many buildings have multiple shops, but JMC does not conduct physical surveys. So, notices are being sent for lakhs of rupees in the name of 1 or 2 registered shops.

Several shops opened after 2007; it is incorrect to include old dues in these notices.”On Thursday, members of the Jaipur Vyapar Mahasangh met JMC Commissioner Gaurav Saini, who assured them that incorrect notices will be verified, and no trader will be harassed. “Meetings will be held in every market along with senior officials, and camps will be set up to resolve issues on the spot,” Saini said. Revenue DC-1 Manoj Kumar Verma said, “After receiving a notice, traders are given 15 days to raise objections, but most do not. The errors that occurred will now be corrected.”The state govt issued a notification under Section 102 of the Rajasthan Municipal Act, 2009, in 2016, exempting residential plots up to 300 sq yards, commercial shops up to 100 sq yards, and flats up to 1,500 sq ft from UD tax.
