Shillong: A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his wife by burning her alive 20 years ago in the Jaintia Hills region of Meghalaya, police said on Wednesday.“The court of the sessions judge, Jowai, NA Khan, convicted Stam Surong, sentencing him to life imprisonment for the uxoricide,” a police statement read.
The case originated from an FIR filed by Barwill Singh Sari at the Ummulong Beat House. According to the FIR, on Sept 8, 2006, at around 5 am, the accused, Stam Surong, a resident of Mukhla Nongrim village, set his wife, Before Sari, on fire using kerosene oil inside their residence.“Before succumbing to her injuries, the victim narrated the details of the incident to her family members. The case was registered as Jowai P.S. Case No. 104(9)06 under Section 302 of the IPC and was investigated and charge-sheeted by SI A. Rymbai,” the statement added.After a thorough trial, the court found the accused guilty of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. Consequently, Surong was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs. 5,000, the statement read.
