Inspector suspended for mishandling murder case in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Jnanabharathi police inspector Ravi MS has been suspended for mishandling a murder case in Sept last year. Deepak Raj, 18, a resident of Annapoorneshwarinagar, west Bengaluru, was brutally assaulted by his acquaintances, who held him captive and demanded Rs 10,000 ransom on Sept 7. The victim, who worked as a delivery agent, developed severe health issues and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on the evening of Sept 8. When Deepak’s mother, Yashoda, approached Jnanabharathi police to file a complaint against the accused youths, a zero FIR was registered and the case was transferred to Tavarekere police station of Bengaluru South district (then Ramanagara district police), citing jurisdiction of the crime spot. Tavarekere police registered the case under charges of murder and other sections of BNS on Sept 9 and transferred the case to Jnanabharathi police. Following this, Jnanabharathi cops registered a regular FIR on Sept 13.Inspector Ravi not only neglected his duty by registering a zero FIR and transferring the case to Tavarekere despite the incident happening in Jnanabarathi police’s jurisdiction, but he was allegedly negligent during investigation, officials said. When Deepak’s mother approached senior officials about the delay in action against the accused due to the jurisdictional fight, an inquiry was ordered. An ACP was assigned to investigate the case and file a report. Based on the report, commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh Tuesday placed Ravi under suspension on charges of dereliction of duty.
