IKS to be integrated across subjects, says UGC official

Vadodara: The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) is not a standalone programme but is intended to be integrated across all subjects to bring Indian perspectives, concepts and values into mainstream education, said Gopichand Merugu, joint secretary of the University Grants Commission (UGC), on Saturday.Addressing the valedictory ceremony of a six-day capacity-building programme at the UGC–MMTTC of the Central University of Gujarat (CUG), Merugu said the objective of IKS is to make education more relevant, holistic and rooted in Indian thought. He added that such programmes are designed to deepen understanding of IKS and facilitate its effective inclusion in curricula, fostering character building, holistic personality development and indigenous research orientations.CUG’s in-charge vice-chancellor Atanu Bhattacharya, said IKS is not confined to Sanskrit or Pali texts alone but is equally embedded in modern and regional languages. “To understand IKS in its entirety, exploration of multiple languages is essential. It is not merely a tool, but a philosophy,” he said.Over the six-day programme, 16 resource persons conducted 27 sessions, which were attended by 66 participants.
