Chandigarh: Four Congress MPs from Haryana in Lok Sabha; Jai Prakash from Hisar, Deepender Hooda from Rohtak, Varun Chaudhary from Ambala, and Satpal Brahmachari from Sonipat; on Tuesday reiterated the demand to include Haryana as host or co-host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. They added that the Haryana govt should immediately propose hosting or co-hosting the Games. Earlier too, all four MPs had protested in the Parliament complex regarding the issue.“Athletes from Haryana win more than 50% medals for the country. What is unfortunate is that the Haryana govt did not even send any proposal for hosting or co-hosting the event. Today, sports infrastructure in Haryana is in poor shape, with athletes losing lives while practising on grounds. If Haryana can host the Games, atleast some funds will flow, and things might get better,” said MP Deepender Hooda.

On the other hand, MP Jai Prakash said that Haryana, with 2% of the country’s total population, has 21% representation in the Olympic athletes’ contingent, and approximately 50% share in the medal tally. “Still, we received a very small sum under Khelo India. This is a cruel joke. During the previous Hooda govt, sports stadiums were built even in rural areas,” he said.Sonipat MP Satpal Brahmachari, too, said that Haryana was given a low allocation in Khelo India budget. “Out of the country’s ₹3500 crore Khelo India budget, ₹600 crore was given to Gujarat, and Haryana, which brings the most medals, was given only ₹80 crore, which was the lowest in the country. While Haryana’s athletes bring the most medals in the Olympics, Asian, and Commonwealth Games, they were still ignored,” he added. MSID:: 128157942 413 |
