1. Check Your Eligibility

To vote in a Canadian federal election, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen (permanent residents cannot vote).

  • Be at least 18 years old on election day.

  • Prove your identity and address (see Step 3).

2. Register to Vote

You can register:

  • Online at Elections Canada

  • At your local Elections Canada office

  • On election day at your polling station

If you’re already registered (check online), you’ll receive a voter information card in the mail before the election.

3. Prove Your Identity & Address

You need to show one of these combinations:

  • Option 1: One government-issued ID with your photo, name, and address (e.g., driver’s license).

  • Option 2: Two pieces of ID (one must have your address), such as:

    • Health card + utility bill

    • Passport + bank statement

  • Option 3: If you don’t have ID, you can declare your identity and address in writing and have someone vouch for you (they must be registered in the same polling division).

4. Find Your Polling Station

  • Your voter information card will tell you where to vote.

  • You can also check online at Elections Canada.

5. Vote on Election Day

  • Polls are usually open from 9:30 AM to 9:30 PM (local time).

  • Bring your ID and go to your assigned polling station.

  • A poll worker will give you a ballot.

  • Mark your ballot with an “X” next to your chosen candidate.

  • Fold your ballot and return it to the poll worker for counting.

6. Alternative Ways to Vote

  • Advance Voting: Vote in person before election day (dates are announced).

  • Mail-in Voting: Apply online to vote by mail (deadlines apply).

  • At an Elections Canada Office: Vote in person before election day.
