Sheikhpura came into existence on 31 july 1994 from Munger district. With the efforts of the then MLA Rajo Singh, the then Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav gave it the status of the district. Along with this, it was also announced to make Barbigha a subdivision. But due to various politicians, Barbigha could not be made subdivision. But on 31 july 1994 itself, some part of Barbigha was cut and separated in the name of Shekhopursarai. There are only 6 blocks in this district Sheikhpura, Barbigha, Ariari, Chewda, Ghat Kosumbha and Shekhopursarai. While the subdivision is also only Sheikhpura is only Sheikhpura. There are only two assembly constituencies in this district Barbigha and Sheikhpura. While both have different Lok Sabha constituencies.

Barbigha assembly constituency is part of Nawada Lok Sabha constituency. While Sheikhpura falls in the Jamui Lok Sabha constituency. Due to which both Vidhan Sabha have separate MPs.

History Of Sheikhpura

Regarding the history of Sheikhpura District, it is said that during the Mahabharata period, Hidimba, the daughter of a demon named Hindi lived on a hill on its eastern section. He married Pandu’s son Bhima and had a son. Whose name was Ghatotkach. According to Hindu culture, a large part of Hindus also lived near the foothills of the hill. Who named this hill Girihinda. This mountain is now known as Girihinda Mountains. The idols of Lord Shiva Shankar and many other deities are still present on the mountain. The mountain is still spreading modern colors and is attracting everyone towards it. Regarding the naming of Sheikhpura City, it is believed that a great Sufi saint Hazrat Makhdoom Shah Shobha Sheikh Rahmatullah Aleh established Sheikhpura City here. Sheikh Saheb cut the mountains and parts of the forests to settle the city and settled here himself. That is why the city was named Sheikhpura after Sheikh Saheb. Even today the city has a good Muslim population and many villages also had Muslim kings, Maharaja and zamindar. One of them was Hussainabad Nawab family that also used to come to the famous actress of the film world. But at present, the condition of the family of Hussainabad Nawab is not good.

A village on the Barbigha-Sheikhpura route is now known as Faridpur. It is also said that it has its own history that the village was established here in the name of Sher Shah alias Farid Khan. A similar story is told from Ramadanpur village of Barbigha block. There is a Samus village next to this village. Where Brahmins and Rajputs have a good public. It is said that there were a large number of temples in Samus village. Which was broken under Mughal rule and settled next to it a village called Ramadanpur. At present, during the excavation, idols of Hindu deities are continuously coming out of the ponds and ponds of Samus village. As a result, Samus village is now known as Vishnudham. Just three months ago, a statue of Goddess Lakshmi was also found during the excavation of a pond in the village.

Sheikhpura is also said to have Sheikhpura one of the main administrative centers during the Pallava rule. It is also believed that the famous Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri dug a well named Kuan in view of the lack of water for drinking and cooking in the present block. This well is also known by the same name. On making lentils with water of this well, it immediately cooks and is also very tasty in food. Sheikhpura got the status of police station in the Mughal period itself.

Sheikhpura also got the status of a large Kotwali and block after independence in the British period. With the efforts of Congress MLA Rajo Singh, Sheikhpura got the subdivision on 14 April 1983, then on 31 july 1994 district. After the formation of the district, the development of Sheikhpura is also going on continuously. Today the district is celebrating its 29th establishment anniversary. After the formation of the district, the people of Sheikhpura, Barbigha, Shekhopursarai, Chewda, Ariyari and Ghatkosumbha block are getting a lot of relief. Otherwise people here had to run to Munger for some work.
