Ludhiana: As part of the Punjab govt’s ongoing ‘War on Drugs’ campaign, the district police have arrested a suspected peddler and seized a significant cache of narcotics, including heroin and methamphetamine. The suspect, identified as Taranvir Singh Dhanna of Neelon Kalan village, was intercepted by Koom Kalan police following a targeted operation on Jan 30. Acting on “reliable information” that the suspect was transporting contraband toward Kuhara Chowk, officers established a checkpoint on Machhiwara Road.
The subsequent search of a brand-new vehicle led them to seize 273 g heroin, 61 g “ice” (crystal methamphetamine), Rs 60,000 in suspected drug proceeds, and a new vehicle allegedly used for distributionCriminal ProfilePreliminary investigations revealed that the accused was a repeat offender. Police confirmed that Dhanna already faced four prior criminal cases registered at various stations. Ludhiana’s police commissioner, Swapan Sharma, noted that the arrest was a result of intensified surveillance under the state’s special anti-drug mandate.The suspect has been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Detectives now focus on the broader supply chain to dismantle the network behind the shipment. “We are currently probing the source of the consignment and identifying the intended recipients,” a police spokesperson said. “Further disclosures are expected as the interrogation continues.”
